Connecting to the Internet

Getting Started Guide

Configure an account that defines how to reach your Internet Service Pro-
vider
OpenLinux provides several tools that you can use to connect to the Internet
using PPP. The most convenient of these is the KPPP tool, which is included with
the KDE Desktop.
In order to use KPPP or the script-based PPP connection described later in this
chapter, you must collect some basic information from your ISP. This informa-
tion includes:
•
A username and password for your account.
•
The authentication type (such as PAP or CHAP)
•
The DNS name server’s IP address
•
A gateway IP address
•
You may also have a static IP address assigned to your account, though
this is not common.
NOTE: Many ISPs now provide scripts to connect their cus-
tomers who run Linux. If you have a special utility or script
from your ISP, try that software before using KPPP--it’s
probably pre-configured and will be even easier than using
KPPP.
